Both. Personally I don't care for the 357 at normal loads, it's hard on my ears in hunting situations. This comes from a person that has owned both 45 and 357 mag shot both carried both extensively for SD in the past but owns or carries neither now so no owners bias. So a .357 Magnum round exits the barrel with kinetic energy equal to the energy required for linear vertical displacement of 530 pounds through a one foot distance, while a .45 Colt (LC Long Colt) round exiting the barrel has energy equal to the amount required to displace 500 pounds over the same one foot distance.

The .357 magnum is a proven manstopper but it's also proven it's tendency for over penetration. I played with this was well. Kind of hard to go wrong w/ either one. The large diameter .45 can do this as well, as long as you really don’t want to eat what you shoot. .357 is flatter shooting & penetrates better, .45 has a bigger bullet w/ more knockdown.
